What Foods Celebs Eat to Lose Weight

Actresses, models, actors, newscasters, athletes and other well-known public figures often rely on their looks to help stay at the top of their professions. In addition to spending significant money on hair, nails and clothing, celebrities keep their bodies lean and toned through exercise and diet. Some celebs are willing to divulge their diet secrets, often recommended by dietitians, personal trainers or other peers. What works for one celebrity might not work for you, but it's fun and interesting to learn what the rich and famous eat to stay in shape.

JESSICA BIEL

This actress eats snacks without preservatives, additives or other unhealthful ingredients, says her trainer Jason Walsh. Instead of fried potato chips, which are high in saturated and trans fat, Biel eats baked chips and Kashi TLC 7-Grain crackers that she dips in hummus, a dip made from mashed chick peas.

CAMERON DIAZ

To keep her figure trim, Diaz avoids white carbohydrates such as potatoes, bread, pasta and rice. Because carbohydrates are an important source of nutrition, Diaz eats fruits and vegetables to make up for not eating starches, says her trainer, Teddy Bass.

SARAH FERGUSON, DENISE RICHARDS AND CHARLIZE THERON

To prevent bloating before public appearances, some celebrities avoid vegetables that produce gas, such as cauliflower, cabbage, onions, beans, prunes, apples and broccoli. Water-based vegetables are the choice of Fergie, Richards and Theron before they get in front of the cameras, according to their nutritionist, Carrie Wiatt. Wiatt recommends foods such as celery, cucumbers, lettuce, melon, oranges and grapes, which won't expand in your stomach as much as other foods.

ANNE HATHAWAY AND LIV TYLER

In order to suppress their appetites, these two starlets added a variety of spices or spicy foods to their meals, on the recommendation of their trainer, David Kirsch. Additions to food such as Tabasco sauce, red pepper flakes or jalapenos raise metabolism, further helping with weight loss, according to nutritionist Jennifer Crum of the New York University Langone Medical Center.

JENNIFER GARNER, ELIZABETH BERKLEY

To keep hunger at bay between meals, some celebs carry snacks. Garner and Berkley's trainer recommends they eat every three to four hours and suggests they carry coolers of 150-calorie snacks, such as of grapes, string cheese, crackers, sliced turkey or apple slices, when they work. Mix carbs and protein in snacks, for energy and to make the snack more filling, recommends celebrity trainer Rob Parr.

CELEBRITY SPOKESPERSONS

Jared Fogel became a national celebrity when he lost 245 lb. eating exclusively at Subway sandwich shops. He ate a small turkey and a large veggie sub each day, along with diet soda and baked chips. Marie Osmond and Valerie Bertinelli have claimed to lose 40 lb. each using the NutriSystem and Jenny Craig diets, respectively. Sportscaster Chris Berman and former NFL quarterback Dan Marino also claim to eat NutriSystem foods, while Kirstie Alley, Queen Latifah and Monica Lewinsky pitch Jenny Craig. Weight Watchers celebrity endorsers include Jenny McCarthy, Lynn Redgrave and Sarah Ferguson, while Slim Fast spokespersons include Rachel Hunter, Tommy Lasorda, Shari Belafonte, Kathy Lee Gifford, Whoopi Goldberg and Ann Jillian.
